Following its media introduction last fall, journalists world-wide have titled this latest 911 as the best yet. All early indicators point to it remaining every bit the icon it has been since its 1964 debut.

Whether this will be a customer's first or just their latest Porsche 911, it's going to be the most invigorating ownership experience yet, said Detlev von Platen, President and CEO of Porsche Cars North America. For 2012, the 911 has been completely redesigned from the ground up. The newest incarnation applies singular balance to the priorities of a new era, preserving the classic 911 lines, yet revisiting every inch for advances in power and fuel economy. While still instantly recognizable as a Porsche 911 at a glance, 90 percent of the 2012 Porsche 911's components are either new or fundamentally revised.

Longer, lower, wider, 100 lbs. lighter, faster and more efficient than previous models, the 911 is the perfect blend of modern design, intelligent engineering and performance DNA.

In addition to aesthetic improvements, both new models offer significant performance enhancements. The 2012 911 Carrera is equipped with a new, 350-horsepower, 3.4-liter boxer engine that provides five more horsepower (HP) than the outgoing 3.6-liter engine, while the Carrera S features a 400 HP, 3.8-liter boxer engine, a 15 HP improvement versus its predecessor. The 911 Carrera with Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK) accelerates from zero to 60 in 4.4 seconds, while the Carrera S sprints from zero to 60 in a mere 4.1 seconds. That time is reduced even further to 3.9 seconds when equipped with the Sports Chrono Package Plus. Top-track-speeds for the 911 Carrera and Carrera S are 179 and 188 mph, respectively.

As with every generation, the new 911 Carrera continues to raise the bar in both performance and efficiency. This is achieved through systems such as the Automatic Start/Stop function, engine and transmission thermal management, electrical system recuperation, the world's first seven-speed manual transmission and in conjunction with PDK the ability to coast. The new electro-mechanical power steering offers the typical Porsche precision and helps to increase efficiency and reduce fuel consumption.

Porsche Panamera Turbo is Value Champion 2012

The Porsche Panamera Turbo is the car that holds its value best in its class. The vehicle’s residual value after four years was still 56 per cent of the original price, as jointly calculated by Auto Bild and Schwacke. That makes the Gran Turismo the winner of the “Value Champion 2012” title for the lowest percentage depreciation in the luxury class.

“Porsche-badged cars inherently hold their value – especially in the long run”, said Dr. Gernot Döllner, Manager of the Panamera model line, at the prize giving in Berlin on Thursday evening. “For example, approximately 70 per cent of all the Porsches ever made are still on the road, yet further evidence of our models’ ability to hold their value. This accolade further bolsters our vehicles’ value retention.”

The prospective residual value is behind many of the calculations for financing and leasing offers and the purchase decision when it comes to company cars and rental car fleets. It also provides a snapshot of the second hand car market in general. The data on which the selection of the Value Champion 2012 was based were calculated by Schwacke’s experts.

With its 4.8-litre V8-biturbo engine, the Porsche Panamera Turbo develops a rated output of 500 hp, sprints from a standing start to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds and has a top speed of 303 km/h.

The last five years have been very eventful for the company as it branched out into areas like women's fashion, the mobile phone market and fragrances. The group now has its own studio called Porsche Design Studio, which has won more than 130 national and international awards and is one among Europe's most recognized design companies. The group has been awarded the prize for the luxury brand with the best design at the China Luxury Summit 2011 in Shanghai recently.

Dr Juergen Gessler is continuing the tradition of Porsche efficiently. He believes luxury brands need to focus on fulfilling core values and add to quality and improvement of people’s lives. In a freewheeling interview with Just Luxe, the affluent style guide, Dr Gessler has spoken about the engineered luxury and Porsche Design point of view. Here are some excerpts from the interview:

How is today's language of luxury spoken differently than it was a few years ago? What happened in the economy to create such a difference?

Dr Gessler: In the old days luxury has been mainly about showing-off; people wanted to make a clear statement saying, "have a look at me I can afford all that." This has changed a lot nowadays, especially because we have walked across, and endured a few crises. Luxury brands today need to focus on fulfilling core values. It is about quality and improvement of one's life, and it is not important anymore to have more than others as well as to show off. Today companies have to concentrate on and offer a whole lifestyle into which people can buy into, because they do care more about where material comes from, about quality and design as well as their individual style.

What is Porsche Design Studio's vision of engineered luxury? Do some of the subtexts deal with mindful rather than conspicuous consumption?

Dr Gessler: For Porsche Design, not really a lot has changed, as the luxury brand had a very special approach to luxury right from the beginning. Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, the designer of the Porsche 911 and founder of the luxury brand Porsche Design, has always been mindful rather than conspicuous. Take our very first product: the Chronograph 1. It has been the first completely black watch on the market, at a time when watches by definition have been gold or silver. A revolution! The black color has been chosen not to provoke attention, but for another, more particular reason: F. A. Porsche had the idea of creating a time instrument with an uncompromised functional quality. Inspired by the black felt dashboard of a race car, he decided to design the watch in such a way that only the time information was of importance - everything else was non-reflective, in other words: black. He probably had been the first person ever who treated the watch not as a piece of jewelry, but as an instrument of precision.

How does the Porsche Design Group further define engineered luxury through its products?

Dr Gessler: F. A. Porsche liked the idea of combining the aesthetics of a product with its function in conjunction with excellent craftsmanship. That is why Porsche Design introduced the first ever black watch which guaranteed supreme legibility at any occasion and in 1980 again revolutionized the world of watch making with the first-ever titanium-built chronograph as titanium is essentially skin-friendly, lighter ?-half the weight of steel - and corrosion-resistant. Today this general principle is still the core of Porsche Design. We are offering a different kind of luxury: we call it "engineered luxury." Design and luxury engage into a very natural relationship. It represents the perfect combination of design, function, craftsmanship and the use of the finest materials.

How does the architectural credo of Form Follows Function agree with the ideas of Porsche design Studio's engineered luxury?

Dr Gessler: "If you analyze the function of an object, its form often becomes obvious." That's what Ferdinand Alexander Porsche once said. And up to the present day the Porsche Design Studio in Zell am See in Austria follows his design philosophy. Our credo is more advanced than the idea of form follows function. It actually is a different approach as the whole object has to be considered within its functionality: in our ideal Porsche Design world, form and function are equal. One doesn't work without the other, but also, one doesn't follow the other. A truly good product has to fulfill both aspects of aesthetic and function in order to be a long-term success. Porsche Design has remained true to this idea, with great success, as we have been recognized with more than 130 national and international awards and today the Porsche Design Studio is among Europe's most recognized design companies.

You said in an interview that you are very interested in learning about the behavioral dynamics underlying why people shop, and how they make their purchase decisions. What have you learned from this particular interest, and how have you applied it to the Porsche Design Studio's product line?

Dr Gessler: By now people developed a feeling for coherency. A product that is only functional but does not look appealing would not become a bestseller neither when it is only looking nice without convincing functionality. If you find these functionally designed items in a surrounding where everything is harmonious, then customers are more likely to spend money. In other words: a brand's concept and its philosophy have to be in line with the customers' individual values and attitudes to make them feel comfortable and willing to buy into this lifestyle world.

Most other brands whose origins began as car brands, Jaguar, Rolls, Bentley, Audi, and even Ferrari and Maserati, have products attached to their sites, but not Design Studios, and not Design Studios who make such diverse offerings as Advent Calendars, Bicycles, and Water Pipes! What do all these products have in common, and what new products may emerge before the end of the year?

Dr Gessler: All other car brand's design studios evolved from the car company. The Porsche Design Studio is unique as it developed completely separate from the car company. Its founder F. A. Porsche has been chief-designer for the sports cars until 1972, then left the company and found its very own design studio, the so called Porsche Design Studio, as well as the luxury brand Porsche Design. The only link at this time was a seat of F. A. Porsche in the supervisory board because as a family member he kept shares in the car company. In 2003 the demand for a successor for Porsche Design emerged and there has been mutual consent that the luxury brand has huge potential. So the Porsche Design Group has been found with a two-thirds share of the car company in order to support the expansion with financial strength.

Rumors of a Porsche Panamera Hybrid for next year??

In addition to the new V-6 model being added to the Porsche Panamera lineup, Porsche is also preparing to launch the Panamera Hybrid next year as a 2012 model. The Panamera Hybrid will use a similar system as the 2011 Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid that will make its debut this fall. In the Cayenne S Hybrid, the system pairs a 333-horsepower, 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 with a 47-horsepower electric motor to produce a combined system output of 380 horsepower and 428 lb-ft of torque. Porsche expects this system to give the 2011 Cayenne S Hybrid fuel economy similar to a four-cylinder engine without compromising the performance expected from a Porsche.

The Panamera Hybrid should be able to improve upon the performance figures for the Cayenne which Porsche claims to be acceleration from zero to 60 miles per hour in just 6.1 seconds with a top speed of 150 mph. Like the Cayenne S Hybrid, the Panamera Hybrid will include a "sailing" mode which allows the fuel supply to be shut off during deceleration at speeds of up to 97 mph as well as the ability to drive under full electric power at speeds up to 40 mph. Porsche’s green technology will continue to push the performance limits with cars like the Porsche 911 GT3 RS Hybrid and the recently announced production version of the Porsche 918 Spyder – a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle.

The 2011 Porsche Panamera now with a V6 Engine

The Porsche Panamera hit showrooms late last year as a 2010 model with a trio of V-8-powered models, but now the four-door Porsche kicks off the 2011 model year with the noted addition of two new models packing V-6 engines under the hood and noticeably lower starting prices. The 2011 Porsche Panamera now has a starting MSRP of $74,400 –a price reduction of $15,400 – but more importantly, the new engine also helps improve the car's overall fuel economy.

Slotting in below the 4.8-liter V-8 used in the Panamera S, 4S and Turbo models, the all-new 3.6-liter V-6 produces 300 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. This engine is shared with the all-new 2011 Porsche Cayenne, and like all Panamera models it comes standard with the seven-speed dual-clutch PDK gearbox. In addition to the new engine, the 2011 Panamera also features an Auto Start Stop function for improved fuel economy and reduced exhaust emissions. Similar to a hybrid-electric vehicle, the Panamera's Auto Start Stop function shuts off the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop and automatically starts the engine back up at take off.

Between the smaller displacement engine and the use of Auto Start Stop, the base rear-wheel drive Panamera is expected to return fuel economy estimates of 18 miles per gallon in the city and 27 mpg on the highway (these figures have not been confirmed by the EPA, though) which are improvements of 2 mpg city and 3 mpg highway compared to the rear-wheel drive, V-8-powered Panamera S. Another benefiting factor is a curb weight that has been reduced from 3,968 pounds down to 3,880. Despite the improved fuel economy, Porsche also claims that the Panamera V-6 still delivers good performance with stated acceleration from zero to 60 miles per hour in six seconds.

Stepping up from the base price of the rear-wheel drive Panamera, the all-wheel drive Panamera 4 starts at $78,900. Like the base model, the Panamera 4 offers better fuel economy than its V-8 counterpart, the Panamera 4S which we reviewed earlier in the year, with estimates of 18 mpg city and 26 mpg highway (a gain of 2 mpg in both the city and highway estimates). The Panamera 4 also drops about 100 pounds compared to the 4S model with a curb weight of 4,012 pounds, but it loses a second in zero to 60 mph acceleration to its V-8-powered counterpart with a time of 5.8 seconds.

The time: seven minutes, 18 seconds on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife. The power: 620 hp. The weight: 3,020 lb (1,370 kilograms) in road trim with all fluids on board. The car: the new 2011 Porsche 911 GT2 RS.

90 More Horsepower, 154 lbs Less Filling
The latest 911 is the fastest and most powerful road-going sports car ever built in the history of Porsche. With horsepower (hp) up by 90 and weight down by 154 lbs (70 kilograms) in comparison with the previous 911 GT2, the new 911 GT2 RS has a power-to-weight ratio of just 4.9 lbs (2.21 kg) per horsepower, by far the best power/weight ratio in its class. These are the ideal ingredients for an ultra-high-performance sports car with supreme agility and truly blistering performance on the road. Perfectly illustrating Porsche Intelligent Performance, the 2011 GT2 RS achieves a reduction of approximately 5 percent for both fuel consumption and CO2 emission reduction when compared with the previous 911 GT2.

The 3.6 liter six-cylinder boxer engine features two variable turbine geometry turbochargers and provides power to the rear wheels exclusively through a six-speed manual gearbox. Equally impressive stopping power comes from Porsche Composite Ceramic Brakes (PCCB).

Extreme cornering dynamics are ensured by the setup of the springs, Porsche Adaptive Suspension Management (PASM), unique anti-roll bars, specific engine mounts and recalibrated Porsche Stability Management (PSM), whose stability and traction control functions can be switched off individually.

The combined effect of these developments is evident on the racetrack. In fact, the ultimate 911 accelerates from 0-60 in 3.4 seconds, boasts a top-track speed of 205 mph and laps the famed Nürburgring-Nordschleife racetrack in just 7 minutes and 18 seconds.

Carbon Fiber, Limited Production
In its looks, the new 911 GT2 RS stands out clearly from the other 911 models through the lavish use of carbon-fiber-reinforced (CFR) components with a matt-black surface finish, even wider wheels (including flared wheel arches at the front), new light-alloy wheels with central locking and "GT2 RS" model designations on the doors and rear lid. Matte-finish carbon also graces the redesigned front spoiler lip and the 3/8th of an inch (10 mm) taller rear spoiler lip - which both enhance aerodynamics and provide extra downforce.

The interior of the 911 GT2 RS also exudes sporting performance in virtually every detail. Lightweight two-piece bucket seats made of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic are standard, as are lightweight door panels with fabric straps instead of traditional door handles. The basic interior color is black, which contrasts with red elements, such as the seat center sections, the roof lining and segments of the steering wheel rim. The gearshift and handbrake lever are also finished in red alcantara.

Limited to just 500 units worldwide, the 911 GT2 RS will be available in the U.S. October 2010.

In preparation for the upcoming 2011 Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid as well as other planned models, Porsche has released specific details on the different hybrid systems that it plans to start producing later this year.

The Porsche Cayenne S Hybrid will launch simultaneously alongside the redesigned 2011Cayenne this fall, and it uses a parallel hybrid system like many of the conventional hybrid-electric vehicles (HEV) currently on the market. Porsche will use the powerful and efficient 333-horsepower, 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 that is paired with a 47-hp electric motor. Aside from the ability to drive on electric-only power at speeds of almost 40 miles per hour, the Cayenne S Hybrid also features a 'sailing' feature that allows for further fuel conservation by completely shutting off or disengaging the engine from the drivetrain at speeds up to 97 mph. For improved performance, the hybrid system will also help boost the engine's output under heavy acceleration which should allow the Cayenne to accelerate surprisingly fast as the system combines for a total of 428 lb-ft of torque at just 1,000 rpm. This system uses a 288-volt nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery pack mounted under the rear cargo area.

Porsche Celebrates 60 years in North America

With a new sedan, an upcoming hybrid and one of the most beautiful concept vehicles in recent history, it seems that Porsche has plenty to celebrate lately, but it won't be passing on an opportunity to celebrate a major milestone. Since the first Porsche cars were sold in the United States in the fall of 1950, the company has since become renowned for its styling, performance and luxury over the last 60 years all thanks to the collective efforts of three men. Dr. Ferdinand "Ferry" Porsche (son of the company's founder), Max Hoffman and Jonny von Neumann all formed the foundation for a successful Porsche brand in North America starting with the sporty and iconic Porsche 356.

Ferry Porsche had extremely low expectations for Porsche sales in the U.S. hoping for just five sales in the first year, but Hoffman, already a seasoned European car importer, had bigger plans in store. Even though the 356 only produced 44 horsepower from its 1.1-liter flat-four engine and cost as much as a luxurious Cadillac convertible, Porsche says that Hoffman went on to sell 32 356s in 1951 and a total of 11 per week by 1954. Hoffman later helped design the iconic black, gold and red Porsche crest that prominently displays a prancing horse.

Although the first Porsches were sold in New York, California quickly became, and still remains, one of the more popular areas for Porsche sales thanks in large part to von Neumann. Like Hoffman, von Neumann was an instant fan of Porsche and began selling them in California. One of von Neumann’s more famous customers was James Dean who bought a 356 Speedster and later traded it for a 550 Spyder - the same car he was tragically killed in. The Porsche 550 Spyder is shown above in black and white next to the image of the all-new 2010 Porsche Boxster Spyder.

Growing from the single-model line that it originally offered, Porsche has since grown to its current lineup of five vehicles that include the Porsche 911, Porsche Boxster, Porsche Cayenne, Porsche Cayman and Porsche Panamera. Inside Look at the Porsche 918 Spyder Hybrid Concept

Porsche took the wraps off their 918 Spyder Concept, a 2-seat mid-engine supercar with hybrid and electric drive technology at the 2010 Geneva Auto Show.

Porsche says the 918 Spyder Concept hits 100 km/h (62 mph) in less than 3.2 seconds, and it blasts to a top speed of 198 mph. Not only that, it laps the Nürburgring in less than 7 minutes 30 seconds, which means it's even faster than the coveted Porsche Carrera GT. When it comes to how 'green' the vehicle is, Porsche says that, when driven accordingly, the plug-in hybrid 918 Spyder Concept gets an amazing 78 mpg, with an emissions level of only 70 grams of C02 per kilometer.

The 918 Spyder Concept is powered by a high-output V-8 3.4-liter engine found in the Porsche RS Spyder racing car. In 918 Spyder form, this mid-mounted engine powers out more than 500 bhp. Electric motors at the front and rear axles add an additional 218 horsepower to its power-packed performance. The V-8's power, and the rear electric motor, reaches Concept's rear wheels via a 7-speed PDK gearbox. The drive to the front wheels is pure electric. The liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery pack behind the cockpit can be charged at home, or by brake regeneration.

Modernity is addressed via the center console, which has a touch screen for what Porsche calls "intuitive" control of the car's functions. Another cool feature is the 918 Spyder Concept is the Range Manager. Using the map in the satellite navigation system, the Range Manager displays the remaining range the Spyder is able to cover. And in cities, it will tell you if you can reach your destination on electric power alone.

911 GT3 R Hybrid's World Debut in Geneva

The 911 GT3 R Hybrid is a perfect example of the Porsche Intelligent Performance philosophy, a principle to be found in every Porsche: More power on less fuel, more efficiency and lower CO2 emissions – on the track and on the road.

With Porsche's 911 GT3 R with innovative hybrid drive making its debut at the Geneva Motor Show, Porsche takes up another visionary driving concept into the future. The innovative hybrid technology featured in the car has been developed especially for racing, standing out significantly in its configuration and components from conventional hybrid systems. In this case, electrical front axle drive with two electric motors developing 60 kW each supplements the 480-bhp four-litre flat-six at the rear of the 911 GT3 R Hybrid. A further significant point is that instead of the usual batteries in a hybrid road car, an electrical flywheel power generator fitted in the interior next to the driver delivers energy to the electric motors.

The flywheel generator is charged whenever the driver applies the brakes, with the two electric motors reversing their function on the front axle and acting themselves as generators. Then, whenever necessary, that is when accelerating out of a bend or when overtaking, the driver is able to call up extra energy from the charged flywheel generator, the flywheel being slowed down electromagnetically in the generator mode and thus supplying up to 120 kW to the two electric motors at the front from its kinetic energy. This additional power is available to the driver after each charge process for approximately6 - 8 seconds.

Energy formerly converted – and thus wasted – into heat upon every application of the brakes, is now highly efficiently converted into additional drive power.
Depending on racing conditions, hybrid drive is used in this case not only for extra power, but also to save fuel. This again increases the efficiency and, accordingly, the performance of the 911 GT3 R Hybrid, for example by reducing the weight of the tank or making pitstops less frequent.

A Pure Burst of Adrenaline - the redesigned Porsche Boxster

The Boxster's nose and tail have been reshaped and given new headlamps and taillights with the latter converted to faster-reacting light emitting diode (LED) illumination. A wide-mouth air intake has been carved out below the front bumper, as well as newer and bigger rim designs. The standard sound system has been augmented with a five-inch display screen and the unit can now play CDs as well as MP3 computer files.

The Newest Member of the Family - Introducing the Porsche Panamera

The first four-door in the company's 61-year history, the Panamera will come to the U.S. in three forms: the S model, powered by a 400-hp, 4.8-liter naturally aspirated V-8; the 4S model which carries the same engine as the S, but comes with all-wheel; and the Turbo model which carries an all-wheel-drive, twin-turbocharged V-8 engine powering out 500 horses. Both models come with the PDK dual-clutch seven-speed transmission that was recently introduced in the 911.

The Panamera is equipped with a complete collection of Porsche driving aids, including stability control (Porsche Stability Management, or PSM), an adjustable damping system (Porsche Active Suspension Management, or PASM), and an adaptive air suspension with an active anti-roll stability system (Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control, or PDCC), which is shared with the Cayenne sport-ute.

Just like serious sports cars, the Panamera is equipped with a launch-control system. All models also offer a Start/Stop system, which uses a conventional but higher-capacity starter motor. As soon as the Panamera comes to a stop, the system shuts off the engine, then restarts very softly when the driver lifts his foot off the brake. It's an industry first for V-8 engines and automatic transmissions.

The interior design, technology features and ergonomics is in a class of its own… Inside, the Panamera offers accommodations for four adults. The rear seats are eight-way power-adjustable units that not only recline but also feature adjustable thigh support and powered lumbar support. There are seat heaters and flow-through cooling fans in the bottom cushions and backrests. The Panamera's cockpit and console comes with a sleek design of push button controls and a conveniently placed Navigation screen.
